Coaches wanted - urgently!

Whether it is football or netball, sport plays a big part in the lives of young people in Malawi. SIM Malawi, through Sports Friends Malawi, is tapping into this enthusiasm and is providing sports coaching alongside training in the Word of God.

The demand for the work of Sports Friends Malawi is growing rapidly and there is a real need for people to come and get involved with the project. Currently there are four Ministry Opportunities, one for a Regional Co-ordinator and three for sports coaches, to back up Director Luke Voight and Sports Ministry Trainer and Co-ordinator Pastor Fostance Mtolo who lead the ministry.

“The work is really taking off and the numbers already are staggering,” said Luke Voight.

“We currently work with 96 churches which between them have around 110 sports teams – football and/or netball – with over 4,200 young people involved, and this is just the beginning!”

“A large part of our work is with our partner church, the Africa Evangelical Church (AEC), but we are also starting to see other church groups and denominations wanting to get involved with Sports Friends Malawi.”

Over 70% of Malawi‘s population is under 25 years of age. Sport is a powerful and effective means to reach out to youth and to build lasting relationships with them and their families.

The Sports Friends Ministry Development Leader will work in cooperation with Malawian churches to train, equip, and counsel church planters and leaders to use sports ministries as a tool for powerful evangelism, church planting and discipleship so that we can see God's Kingdom expand in Malawi among the youth.

In addition, the coaches will provide sports ministry training, coaching, instruction and sports ministry model development to support the development of effective sports ministry programs in Malawi. Focus on vision casting, training, coaching instruction, model development, and problem solving with Malawian sports ministers.

“We work closely with Malawian church denominations and church-planting movements to see sustainable, Malawian church-led sports ministry programs developed” said Luke.

“The focus of this missionary effort is on the training, equipping and transference of sports ministry expertise to Malawian leaders. It is a really exciting time to be part of this amazing ministry and we look forward to welcoming people to come and join in this work of God on either a short- or long-term basis.”
