Pastor Wadi Chamambala

2 Timothy 2:1-2

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.

These words from Paul to Timothy keep on ringing in my heart when I think of Lay Leadership Training. Africa Evangelical Church (AEC) has leaders (Elders, Deacons and Deaconesses) who haven’t had any formal theological training and yet are expected to execute their tasks with knowledge and wisdom. Through lay-leadership training materials, the pastors who have had theological training, therefore, have the responsibility just like Paul, to pour their lives into these leaders and to teach them to let the Holy Spirit guide them in executing their roles. This will eventually bring trust in the congregation as many will want to learn from these leaders which will result in many lost souls being reached for Christ.

Pastor Wadi Chamambala is one of those in the AEC who is responsible “to pour their lives into these leaders and to teach them to let the Holy Spirit guide them”. He is Pastor of the Africa Evangelical Church in Chirimba on the outskirts of Blantyre and he also works as Administrative Assistant in SIM Malawi’s Blantyre office. He heads up the AEC’s Christian Education Committee through which he was involved in setting up the Lay-Leadership Training project jointly run by the AEC and SIM Malawi.

The training came out of the 2010 Annual Church Conference where it was felt that more trained personnel were needed for the AEC which, in common with other Churches, has more congregations than pastors. A Task Force made up of three Pastors from the AEC and three SIM Malawi missionaries developed a 12-module course designed for lay leaders in the church.

The training has now been rolled out to all AEC Pastors who, in turn, will train their own lay leaders. As new lay leaders are appointed they will go through the training so that the AEC can build up a strong cadre of trained clergy and laity.

Lay-Leadership Training is also supported by SIM Malawi project number
